One ETA, All Three Countries
Let’s get this out of the way first.
England, Scotland, and Wales are all part of the United Kingdom. Your UK ETA is a UK-wide document. That means a single approved ETA lets you travel freely between all three countries without any additional permit or border check.
You can fly into London Heathrow, take the train up to Edinburgh, cross over to Cardiff, and come back to Manchester to fly home. All on one ETA. No need to apply separately for each country or notify anyone that you’re crossing into Scotland or Wales.
If you’re also considering Northern Ireland, the same applies. All four nations of the UK are covered under a single ETA approval.
What the UK ETA Allows You to Do as a Tourist
The UK ETA Tourist Visa is designed for short-term visits. As a Malaysian tourist, here’s what you can do with it:
- Visit friends and family
- Go sightseeing and travel around the country
- Attend concerts, festivals, or sporting events
- Do short recreational activities like hiking or cycling tours
- Transit through the UK on your way to another country
You can stay for up to 6 months per visit. Your ETA itself is valid for 2 years from the date of approval (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first). During those 2 years, you can travel to the UK as many times as you want.

England
England has the most international flight connections. Most Malaysians fly into London Heathrow (LHR) or London Gatwick (LGW).

Before You Travel: ETA Checklist for Malaysian Tourists
Make sure you have all of this sorted before your departure date.
Your ETA must be approved before you board. As of February 25, 2026, airlines are required to deny boarding to passengers who don’t have a valid ETA on file. This is now actively enforced.
Here’s what you need to confirm:
- Your UK ETA is approved and linked to your current passport
- Your Malaysian passport is valid for the full duration of your trip
- Your ETA approval email is saved (screenshot it, don’t rely only on internet access)
- You know your entry date and planned stay (don’t exceed 6 months)
- You have accommodation details or itinerary if asked at the border

Passport Matters
This is one of the things Malaysians miss most often.
Your UK ETA is linked to your specific passport. Not your identity. Your passport number.
If your passport expires and you renew it before your trip, your old ETA becomes invalid. You’ll need to apply for a new ETA on your new passport even if the old one was still within its 2-year validity.

How Long Does It Take to Get Approved?
Most applications are approved within a few hours. In some cases, it can take up to 3 working days.
Don’t apply the night before your flight. Give yourself at least a week. Two weeks is even better, especially if you’re traveling during peak holiday season.

How Much Does It Cost?
The official UK ETA fee is £16. At current exchange rates, that’s roughly RM90.
You pay once, and the ETA covers you for 2 years and multiple trips. So if you’re planning more than one UK trip in the next two years (which many Malaysian tourists do), you only pay this fee once.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
A rejected or delayed ETA can ruin your trip. Here are the most common errors Malaysians make when applying:
Wrong passport number – One digit off and your application links to a non-existent document.
Expired passport – If your passport expires during your planned stay, your ETA may not be valid for the full trip.
Applying too close to departure – Even though most approvals are fast, some applications require additional review. Don’t gamble on last-minute timing.
Not updating after passport renewal – Renewing your passport after getting your ETA doesn’t automatically transfer it to the new document.

What You Cannot Do on a Tourist ETA
This is important. Your UK ETA tourist authorization does not allow you to:
- Work in the UK – Paid or unpaid employment is not allowed

- Receive public funds – You cannot claim benefits or use NHS services beyond emergency treatment
- Extend your stay past 6 months – There’s no ETA extension option. If you want to stay longer, you need to leave and re-enter (and even that has limits if done repeatedly)
Multiple Trips? Your ETA Has You Covered
If you’re the kind of traveler who goes back to the UK more than once, good news. A single approved ETA covers unlimited trips during its 2-year validity, with each stay up to 6 months.
So you could visit London in December, return to Scotland in the spring, and pop over to Wales the following year, all on the same ETA.
